Every time we go to New York, we have breakfast at Balthazar, the closest thing to a French bistro outside of Paris. The ambiance is incredible; there’s always a buzz of activity and it’s a great place for people-watching. Balthazar bakery is just next door if you want to get something to go. Everything I’ve ever ordered has been delicious. This time, we started off with Mimosas (it was 10 a.m. after all). I then had 2 organic soft-boiled eggs with buttered toast “soldiers”. Perfection. Several others had the scrambled eggs with asparagus and mushrooms in puff pastry. One other person had the brioche French toast with applewood smoked bacon, served with a jug of warm maple syrup. I’m salivating just thinking about it. Click here to see the complete breakfast menu. I’m enclosing the recipe for the brioche French toast from Balthazar which comes from Martha Stewart. How about it this weekend?
Balthazar is always on our NYC itinerary too. My favourite breakfast dish there is the Eggs en Cocotte. I love how rich the baked creamy eggs are with the crust of parmesan cheese on top and the fresh thyme infusing it all. And the Mimosa washes it down perfectly!
We also love going to Balthazar’s sister restaurant Pastis. Usually has more hustle and bustle than Balthazar (i think because it’s crammed into a tighter space) and serves the best post-hangover brunch drink, the Bloody Marie. It a Bloody Mary with fresh horseradish and a shot of Pastis thrown in for good measure. heaven!
We’ve never been to Pastis although it’s on our list. The Bloody Marie sounds delicious.
